ALS/MND

ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)/MND is a kind of irreversible deadly motor neuron disease (MND). This kind of degenerative disease occurred in motor nerve cells. Its progression can be very fast and leads to gradual decrease of motor nerve cells, gradual increase of amyotrophy and muscle weakness until complete paralyses. The disease also affects lung functions and results in respiratory failure eventually.

The causes of ALS/MND can be related to various factors, including gene mutations, aggregation of misfolded proteins, oxidative stress damage (free radical damage), mitochondrial dysfunction, glutamate excitotoxicity, neuroinflammation, abnormal RNA, and axonal transport disorders in motor nerve cells, etc.

In recent years, the therapeutic methods targeted for the above mentioned pathogenesis have not shown remarkable effects, and have not achieved the goal of controlling disease progression, restoring motor function, and improving life quality. The research at Wu Medical Center(WMC) aims to adopt a comprehensive treatment to address multiple pathological processes, as well as problems caused by multiple gene mutations, aiming to stop disease progression, extend patient’s lifespan, restore patient’s motor function, and improve patient's life quality.

Although ALS/MND is a very serious disease, we can't give up hope in fighting it. Patients should get diagnosed as soon as possible for comprehensive treatment in the earliest possible stage. With the progress of science and technology, many patients can obtain good improvement. Through proper treatment, the quality of life can be significantly improved and the lifespan of a patient can be prolonged. Dr. Wu and his team have also done a lot of research on the disease and are willing to help the patients gain more knowledge about it. If you have any questions/concerns, please contact us. Let's fight  ALS/MND together at Wu Medical Center.
