Parkinson's Disease
Progress In The Treatment of Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a type of neurodegenerative disease whose pathological process is based on slow depletion of neurons and disappearance of dopaminergic neurons. The disease is characterized by abnormal posture and movement in clinical practice. The basic pathological change that leads to such clinical symptoms is the loss of pigment cells in the substantia nigra and other pigment nerve nuclei, and a remarkable increase of Lewy bodies.
Generally speaking, the dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson’s disease patients are reduced by 30% compared with the normal control group of the same age. At middle to late stages, the dopaminergic neurons can decrease by 66%. And the increase of Lewy bodies is almost proportional to the decrease of dopaminergic neurons.
It is currently widely believed that as Parkinson’s disease patients age, their conditions get worse, with Lewy bodies increased more and dopaminergic neurons reduced more in the brain. The reduction of nerve cells leads to a decrease of endogenous dopamine levels and a decline of the ability to utilize dopamine (exogenous). This means that both dopamine supplementation therapy and dopamine receptor stimulation therapy will gradually become ineffective.
One of the reasons why Parkinson’s disease is progressing and treatment failure is a common thing in treating Parkinson’s disease is because that gene mutation has caused remarkable increases of alpha synuclein protein concentration and Lewy bodies. There has been lack of treatment for this disease.
Now here at Wu Medical Center(WMC), there is a new treatment (nerve regeneration + CAST therapy) being used to increase cerebral nerve cells, improve endogenous dopamine levels and decrease alpha synuclein protein concentration. Under the action of new nerve cells, alpha synuclein proteins are transformed into soluble unfolded proteins, which can reduce the formation of Lewy bodies, thereby preventing the disease from progressing.
